Resting Heart Rate (Resting HR)

Rating

Resting heart rate is the heart rate at complete rest, best measured in the morning right after waking up, while lying down, before getting out of bed.

In detail

In untrained adults it's usually 60-80 bpm, in endurance-trained athletes often 40-55 — the heart becomes more efficient and pumps more blood per beat (stroke volume increases). A decrease in resting heart rate over time is a good indirect marker of growing aerobic fitness.

How to use it

A sharp rise in resting heart rate by 5-10 beats compared to the usual value for several days in a row is a common early sign of overtraining, illness, or insufficient recovery — it's worth reducing the load.
