Anaerobic Zone

Rating

The anaerobic zone is high intensity (usually above 90% of maximum heart rate), at which energy is produced without sufficient oxygen, with rapid accumulation of lactic acid.

In detail

Work in this zone can continue only for a short time — from a few seconds to a few minutes — before muscle acidification forces a pace reduction. Training here develops maximum speed and anaerobic power, but requires long recovery and should not make up a large share of the weekly volume.

How to use it

Anaerobic work is the finishing sprint, short sprints, the fastest intervals; for most amateurs, it's enough to touch this zone no more than once a week.
