1RM (one-rep max)
Rating
1RM (one-rep max) is the maximum weight a person can lift for a single clean repetition of an exercise with correct technique.
In detail
1RM is used as a reference point for planning working weights as percentages (for example, "work at 70% of 1RM" for 8-10 reps). Direct testing of a true 1RM is risky for untrained people — it's more often estimated using a formula based on the weight and number of reps performed to failure with a lighter load.
How to use it
Runners usually don't need to test their actual 1RM — for injury prevention and general strength, working in the range of 60-80% of the estimated maximum for 6-10 reps is enough.
