Weekly Mileage

Rating

Weekly mileage is the total distance of all runs in a week. It's one of the main predictors of performance in long-distance events, but also the main source of injury when it grows too rapidly.

In detail

Mileage is increased gradually (see the 10% Rule), usually with a recovery week every 3-4 weeks, when mileage is reduced by 20-30% for recovery. For a marathon, amateurs typically train at a weekly volume of 40-80 km; for ultramarathons, it's noticeably higher.

How to use it

Track your mileage over 4 weeks rather than just one — a sharp spike in a single week is not as dangerous as a steady increase of more than 10% every week in a row.
